Beers

We make a full range of beers that encompasses mixed fermentation heritage ales, hoppy (and not so hoppy) contemporary brews and a rotating slate of seasonal and special beers with something to tempt every palate. All of our beers are unfiltered and vegan. While we try to make them reasonably clear, we don’t fine most of them (and where we do, we use vegan-friendly finings), so they can sometimes be a bit hazy – that’s normal.

HERITAGE ALES

Our heritage ales are based on nineteenth century recipes and tasting notes that we’ve researched in brewery archives. They are all mixed-fermentation beers that use Brettanomyces claussenii alongside modern ale yeasts.

We can’t guarantee that our heritage ales taste exactly the same as their Victorian counterparts, and we’ve not stuck rigidly to the recipes, given how different the ingredients are now compared with then, but we know from the tasting notes, historical references and the evolution of Belgian beers over the same period that we’re along the right lines.

All our Heritage Ales are brewed to be great if drunk today, or they can be laid down and aged to allow their flavours to evolve.

1892 IPA

Our 1892 IPA packs a bit of a punch at 6.9% ABV, but we’ve actually taken it down a notch from where its Victorian equivalent would have been. It’s a robust India Pale Ale based on an 1890s recipe, far darker and more malty than a modern pale ale. The main hops are true to the era, with fuggles and goldings styles for bittering and flavour, but we’ve added a sprinkling of US citra and amarillo to give a slight touch of citrus aroma.

1892 IPA has won several awards, including:

  • SIBA SE Keg Competition 2020 – Wild and Sours – Bronze
  • Great Taste Awards 2019 – Bottled Beers – 2 Star

1892 IPA is available in cask, KeyKeg, 5-litre mini-cask and 500ml bottle.

1820 PORTER

Our 1820 Porter wouldn’t have been out of place in an early nineteenth century porterhouse and at 6.6% ABV is about on the mark for the time. This porter is full of chocolate and coffee notes and based on an 1800s recipe. We avoid using roasted malts for this ale, instead loading in the chocolate malt and wheat, giving it a smooth, rich flavour.

1820 Porter has won several awards, including:

  • Great Taste Awards 2019 – Bottled Beers – 2 Star
  • The Drinks Business – Global  Beer Competition 2018 – Silver
  • Kentish Belle MicroPub Awards Autumn 2018 –  Porter and Stout Category – Gold

1820 Porter is available in cask, KeyKeg, 5-litre mini-cask and 500ml bottle.

1853 ESB

Our 1853 ESB is a deliciously rich Extra Special Bitter, using British and noble hops for bittering and flavour, then heavily finished with New Zealand’s Dr Rudi. This beer is fresh tasting and easy drinking. 5.3% ABV.

1853 ESB is available in cask, KeyKeg, 5-litre mini-cask and 500ml bottle.

CONTEMPORARY BEERS

Our contemporary range includes a tasty mix of pales and bitters featuring a variety of hops from all over the world. While we like our hoppy beers, we sometimes like to make the malt or the yeast the star of the show, and we aim to make all our brews balanced in bitterness, flavour and aroma.

PAN GALACTIC PALE ALE

Pan Galactic Pale Ale (4.6% ABV) is a bright, smooth and fruity pale named partly for the gargleblaster of Douglas Adams fame, but also in honour of the Galaxy hops that make up a large part of its hop bill. You can read more about Pan Galactic Pale Ale in our blog post about it.

Pan Galactic Pale Ale has won several awards, including:

  • Great Taste Awards 2020 – Bottled Beers – 1 Star
  • Great Taste Awards 2019 – Bottled Beers – 1 Star

HOPPY LITTLE FISH

Hoppy Little Fish is our brand new Table Beer. At 3.5%, it’s a take on our Hoppy Pale Ale series, retaining all the hoppy flavour but at a lower ABV.

EDMONTON BEST BITTER

The brewery “grew up” in Edmonton, so we wanted to honour our adopted hometown with a beer of its own. Decked out in livery inspired by the old Borough of Edmonton coat of arms, this 4.3% ABV best bitter is a modern take on the ales that were historically brewed in the Lea Valley. It combines a traditional British malt base with an international line-up of hops, including one of our favourites – the English hop Archer, which has a rich stonefruit note to it.

Edmonton Best Bitter is available in cask, KeyKeg, 5-litre mini-cask and 500ml bottle.

CASHMERE BRUT IPA

Cashmere Brut IPA (6.7% ABV) was designed by Beerblefish co-founder Bethany and then created by general manager Glenn and the brewing team for a very special purpose – Bethany is allergic to grapes, and she wanted something to fill the wine-shaped hole on her dinner table. Cashmere Brut IPA is a British take on a new North American style. This beer showcases the Cashmere hop, with its gentle lemony flavour. As a brut style, the finish on this beer is dry, giving it characteristics similar to a sparkling wine. Its lack of bitterness and subtle hoppiness make it an ideal beer to pair with chicken or white fish.

Cashmere Brut IPA is available in 750ml bottle.

BLACKBEERBLE STOUT

Our Blackbeerble Stout (5.2% ABV) was one of the first Beerblefish beers we made. It’s a mellow, chocolatey stout, with a hint of forest fruits. Its rich malt base is achieved using chocolate malt and chocolate wheat.

Blackbeerble Stout is available in cask, 5-litre mini-cask and 500ml bottle.

SEASONAL AND SMALL BATCH BEERS

INFINITE IMPROBABILITY SAISON

Our Infinite Improbability Saison is a winter saison, brewed in the depths of the British winter with British hops and malt, and Belgian belle saison yeast. This annual favourite is typical of the farmhouse style – rough and ready, with slight peppery and citrus notes delivered by the yeast. Read more about Infinite Improbability and the saison style in our blog post about it.

Infinite Improbability won a Gold award at The Drinks Business Global Beer Masters 2021.

Infinite Improbability Saison is usually available from late February until stocks run out, in KeyKeg, 5-litre mini-cask and 500ml bottle.

LADY MILDMAY

Our Lady Mildmay mild (3.8% ABV) is brewed once a year for CAMRA’s mild month of may. Named after the Mildmay area in Islington, which Beerblefish founders James and Bethany used to pass through on their daily commute, Lady Mildmay is a traditional dark mild with a light body, low bitterness and chocolatey notes.

Lady Mildmay won a Bronze award at The Drinks Business Global Beer Masters 2021.

Lady Mildmay is available each year from May until stocks run out, in cask, 5-litre mini-cask and 500ml bottle.

BARREL-AGED IMPERIAL STOUT 2019

Our annual Imperial Stout is different each year. In 2019, we decided to age the brew for three months in a French red wine barrel, giving the beer vinous qualities to match its 10% ABV strength. Definitely one for sharing with friends. Pair it with a decent steak and chips.

Barrel-Aged Imperial Stout 2019 is available in 750ml bottle.
