Urban Lens: Abstract Photography by Stuart Cashmore

Urban Lens: Abstract Photography by Stuart Cashmore

Stuart is a semi-professional photographer who lives and works in London. Completely self-taught, he has been taking pictures since he was given his first camera at the age of nine – which he describes as being “a very long time ago”.

In the late 1990s, after several decades of family photography, he began to fulfil a long-held desire to explore his artistic and creative side through photography. He first exhibited his photos in 2012 and his work has been shown many times since in both group and solo exhibitions.

Stuart’s work is based primarily on the built environment. He feels that there is so much that we no longer notice because we see it constantly – street furniture, the reflections in glass-fronted buildings, the patters of lines and contours in architecture. In his work he strives to make the viewer look again at everyday objects and see them in a new way, to realise that there is beauty in a bench, a flights of stairs, the shape a streetlamp makes against the sky.

His images reduce objects to line, pattern and colour with little reference to the original, and he rejoices in the patterns generated by repetition and not-quite-perfect-symmetry. His work was once described as “…geometry liberally splashed with colour…” Perhaps it’s no coincidence that one of his favourite artists is Piet Mondrian.

There are two main recurring themes in Stuart’s work: reflections, and steps and stairs. He loves the distorted, surreal shapes thrown up by reflections in windows and glass-fronted buildings, and he has a particular fascination for steps and stairs. He describes them as “…a sort of architectural koan; they are simultaneously static but moving, they go up and they go down, but they stay where they are”.

His work has been exhibited regularly at the London Photo Festival and the pop-up London Photo Gallery since 2012; at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition in 2014; the East Finchley Arts Festival in 2015 and 2018; at the Lauderdale House summer photographic exhibition in 2016 and the London Art Biennale in 2023. He has also had solo exhibitions at the Brewery Arts Centre, Kendal, in 2017; the Leal Cinema, London, in 2019, and now the Beerblefish Brewery, London, in 2023.

Stuart is donating 20% of all sales in this exhibition to Crisis, the national charity for people experiencing homelessness. He has volunteered with Crisis At Christmas every year since 1999 and, as an experienced volunteer, is responsible for running one of the shelters for rough sleepers in Central London over the Christmas period. In recent years, Beerblefish founders James and Bethany have joined him in volunteering at the shelter.

Cider Festival: 2-5 June

Cider Festival: 2-5 June

We’re having a little cider festival over the Platinum Jubilee Weekend! We’ll have around 10 ciders and perries on tap (not necessarily all at the same time), showcasing the best of British cider and perry producers. Our opening hours will be slightly longer than usual on the bank holidays – so the whole weekend is looking like this:

Thursday, 2 June: 14:00-22:00
Friday, 3 June: 14:00-23:00
Saturday, 4 June: 12:00-23:00
Sunday, 5 June: 12:00-22:00

Keep an eye on our socials for the big reveal of the cider list!

We’ll also be having a pop-up bar on 5 June at Walthamstow’s Mile Long Street Party (we’ll be on the High Street, somewhere near the Library, 13:00-19-00). And because we’ve got so much on, we’re postponing June’s Sip Sip Knit crafternoon to Sunday, 12 June!

How to Have a Beerblefish Christmas

How to Have a Beerblefish Christmas

There really aren’t all that many sleeps to go now until Christmas day! For many people, this is likely to be an odd festive season, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t try to make the best of it. At Beerblefish HQ, we’ve been planning what we’ll be offering in the run up to Christmas so that you can get all the beer and gin you need in plenty of time.

Gift Ideas

We’ve just added a load of extra gift ideas to the webshop. There is a variety of gift packs to choose from, with both gin and beer options available, and why not add a t-shirt? Don’t forget that we can send Christmas gifts direct to your loved ones – just tick the “ship to different address” box at checkout and put in their details. If you’d like us to put a message in with the gift, please leave us a note in the free text box. We don’t usually put prices in our packages unless you ask us to, so there’s no worry on that front.

Markets and Fairs

We’re going to be busy over the next few weeks to give you as much opportunity as we can to get your hands on your festive beer! Here’s the calendar (so far) in the run up to the big day:

  • Sunday, 29 November – 10-14.30 – Stroud Green Market (Stroud Green Primary School, corner of Perth and Ennis Roads, N4 3HB)
  • Saturday, 12 December – 10-16.30 – Forty Hall Christmas Fayre (the courtyard at Forty Hall, Forty Hill, Enfield, EN2 9HA – ticketed event, please book in advance)
  • Sunday, 13 December – 10-14.30 – Stroud Green Market (Stroud Green Primary School, corner of Perth and Ennis Roads, N4 3HB)
  • Sunday, 13 December – 10-15.00 – Forty Hall Farmers’ Market (Forty Hall Farm, Enfield, EN2 9HA)

We might add one or two more in if we get the opportunity but, as with everything these days, it’s all subject to COVID-19 restrictions, so keep an eye out on our social media and our events page for all the latest information.

Brewery Shop

The brewery shop will be open as usual on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 12 to 5pm for takeaways of beer and gin. The last day we’ll be open before Christmas is likely to be Saturday, 19 December – keep an eye out for more info nearer the time.

Special Events

On 30 November, our friends at The Little Green Dragon Ale House in Winchmore Hill are running a virtual Christmas Beer Tasting with renowned beer judge, taster and writer Christine Cryne which will feature our 1820 Porter. To register and buy a tasting pack, go to the pub’s webshop – packs will be available for collection on Friday, 27 November or delivery to postcodes local to the pub.

Surprises

We’ve still got a few exciting products up our sleeves (no, not literally) that we’re hoping to get to you before Christmas – watch this space in the next couple of weeks!

It’s Our Fifth Birthday!

It’s Our Fifth Birthday!

We can’t quite believe that we’ve managed to keep a brewery alive for five whole years. The big day is actually on Monday, 3 August, but like all good folks, we’re celebrating at the weekend and not on a “school night”. We’re very sad that we can’t have a really big party at the moment, but we will do something once it’s allowed and sensible – we might be making six the new five, the way things are going at the moment, but rest assured that we’ll let you know when we’ve got realistic plans for a big birthday bash!

In the meantime, we want to thank all the people who helped us to this milestone – friends, family, staff, customers and suppliers have all had a hand in us still being here and making great beer and gin and we couldn’t have done it without your support.

If you’re reading this before 10pm BST on Saturday, 1 August, you still have time to enter our beer competition on Facebook and our tshirt competition on Twitter, so head over there to enter for a chance to win!

We’ve put together a little video of the story so far for your viewing enjoyment!

P.S. Keep an eye out on our social media next week – we’ve got a very special announcement coming up!

Vegan Beer Fest

Vegan Beer Fest

We would like to thank everyone who came down and made this event such a great day for everyone, and to the organisers who made it all possible. There were great people, food and of course great beer.

The number of times I heard, “but I don’t like stout”, or “I only like Pale”, to have people walk off with a half or pint of Stout or ESB was very exciting. Expanding people’s beer horizons was a great experience and being able to explain why it tasted the way it did was very rewarding. Thank you again to all you new found Blackbeerble Stout fans out there!

A great time was had at London Brewers Market

A great time was had at London Brewers Market

Saturday saw us heading out at 6am to go and get set up for the London Brewer’s Market at Old Spitalfields. We were all set up by 9.30 and had time to get some nice photos. It was very exciting for us to sell directly to the customers and get their feedback directly. Also there was fantastic music provided by a great DJ line-up throughout the day.

This was only the second outing for our Bermondsey Abbey Sour, and the first for our brand new Willoughby Stout. The Sour was the only sour I saw at the market and had a number of repeat customers, the feedback we received was very positive and I now have to rush off and recreate this on a larger scale.

With temperatures hitting 30+ under the glass canopy, our Holy Smoke was a winner. At 2.9% it was refreshing from the pint or bottle and allowed a break from the stronger IPAs, DIPAs, and 7% sour on offer. We were run off our feet and didn’t really get a chance to go and explore the other 26 breweries’ offerings.

Hope to see you all again next time and thank you to The Five Points Brewing Company for organising the event, and Old Spitalfields for hosting us.

Beerblefish At MarketInvoice

Beerblefish At MarketInvoice

Today we had another milestone our first bottle order delivered to the great people down at MarketInvoice in Holborn. We took them Bloodletter – Red IPA, Holy Smoke – Single Hop Pale, and Joker!  – Single Hop Pale. Also, a quick mention of David’s fantastic waist coat. The reception the beers got was excellent, with people returning to the fridge multiple times until it was all consumed and we all went home happy.
